Juggling is Magic!

“To win,” first of all, you have to play.”

Albert Einstein

Word from the author

It just so happened that one of the heroes of my book learned to juggle. And then… Then demanding readers forced me to tackle the balls as well. Not to be too far behind his literary heroes. And so, collecting bit by bit heterogeneous information, rereading scientific articles and looking at the juggling technique, I realized with amazement that juggling is not just beautiful fun, but an extremely interesting and useful activity. Mental illness, dementia and depression, dysgraphia and dyslexia, problems with vision, with memory and motor skills of the hands, autism and daunism, the consequences of strokes and traumatic brain injuries are only a small part of those problems that can be treated with balls. If you want to improve your mood — grab the balls! If you want to warm up and have a sports training at work or right at home, juggling will help again! That is why hundreds and thousands of new clubs and clinics seriously practicing juggling appear in the world every year. Treatment with juggling is studied by doctors and has long taken note of scientific institutions. Extensive practice has confirmed that juggling is subject to any age — from 3—4 years old to 70—80.

Unfortunately, I myself took up the balls late (after 50 years), and yet, when after a few months I began to succeed, I realized that I would not limit myself to one skill. Juggling turned out to be magic, which I just had to share with others. So it came out.

I began to talk at meetings not only about my books, but also about juggling, about the close connection between these two arts. And when it turned out that there was no textbook on juggling for some reason (I did not find one), I wanted to fill this gap as well. So this book appeared, the purpose of which was — if not to teach, then at least to interest more people with this wonderful art. By that time, from my own experience and from the experience of my students, I managed to make sure: juggling is not something inaccessible: everything is in your hands! If you really want to master the art of juggling, do not doubt — you will succeed! Not after many mythical years, but quickly enough — after two or three months. And perhaps in a single week! The main thing here is not a factor in time, the main thing is that juggling is worth any effort! Since it is real magic affecting your health and mood, able to develop the brain and rejuvenate the body.

I’ll add: If you can’t wait to start learning, feel free to skip the first part of the book and start the second. Appetite comes with eating, and the theory won’t run away from us. It will be possible to familiarize yourself with the pauses between classes, having read about the history of juggling and the great benefits it brings.

And now we are charged with a fighting mood — and on the Way!

Part 1 History and Theory

“If you can train your arms and legs, then why can’t you train your brain?”

Grigory Perelman

Chapter 1 Once upon a time…

Of course, the art of juggling was not born today. Virtuosos throwing all kinds of objects into the air can be seen on the walls of the oldest Egyptian buildings. In Chinese history, before battles, it was not uncommon for warriors on both sides to show their agility and power by raising heavy boulders and juggling edged weapons. There is a reference to the warrior Lan Tzu from the Song kingdom, who could juggle almost seven swords at the same time! If we recall today’s record of Fowler, who managed to master nine clubs, then the authenticity of historical evidence can be believed.

Well, first we will give a definition of what is understood by juggling:

so, juggling refers to the simultaneous manipulation of three or more objects, such as balls, sticks, rings, clubs and other objects.

Today it is the oldest genre of circus art and one of types of sport. In former times juggling was a prerogative of the vagrant troupes consisting of actors, acrobats and jugglers. These actors moved on open spaces of Europe and charmed a look of curious public. Well, and when from the middle of the eighteenth century in the large cities the first circuses began to open, jugglers, at last, found the haven. Approximately in the same decades their status as circus actors finally was fixed.

Those who are interested in more detailed history of juggling with pleasure I send to books Dominica Zhando “The history of world circus”, Aleksandra Kissa “If you are a juggler”, Karl Hynes Tsiten “Juggling art”, etc. At the same time I will notice: as it is sad, there isn’t a lot of books describing this most fascinating kind of activity. Especially when compared with the amount of literature devoted to theatre, ballet, painting or cinema. One of the professional jugglers with whom I spoke on this topic, suggested that this was partly due to the caste of the juggler’s profession. Any caste protects the secrets and therefore doesn’t hurry to share the mysteries of craft. Alchemists, smiths, doctors, conjurers, skillful soldiers — on the whole preferred to leave the main secrets at themselves that is quite explainable: it was their bread, their way of survival.

Nevertheless, already in the twentieth century there was a fundamental change of a situation. Juggling from caste occupation passed into the category more open and arts of a popular type. It should be added that in the world two new professional holidays appeared: The International Juggler’s Day celebrated on April 18 and the World Juggler’s Day celebrated on the third Saturday of June. Juggling was splashed out of borders of the circus arena, people began to juggle for a tone and own pleasure, to unite in juggling clubs and to hold competitions. Besides numerous clubs there were also such authoritative organizations as the International association of jugglers and the World Federation of Juggling. The set of colourful innovations was added to former classics of single juggling and cross over juggling (when several jugglers throw each other balls, maces and rings). This and popular nowadays contact juggling (rolling of spheres on a body and in palms), juggling from walls and a floor, power juggling (weights and kernels) and even team juggling by maces through a volleyball net.

Till certain time art of jugglers of “three-subject teachers” which also arose in Europe approximately in the thirties of our century stood a little alone. Having been born from saloon juggling, it kept many initial traditions, of which work with a various requisite was main. Instead of habitual rings, maces and balls jugglers “three-subject teachers” used habitual objects in use there are canes, cigars, snuffboxes, cylinders, saucers, billiard balls, etc. A difference in weight, in sizes and a form significantly complicated juggling process, but at the same time made a show more fascinating.

In the last decades of the twentieth century the world got acquainted also with more unusual types of juggling — such as: “Kendam”, “Fleyring”, “Diabolo”, “A stick of a devil” and so forth. To whom it is interesting, details and fascinating videos can be found without effort on the Internet. As far as I remember, personally I was struck most of all by “Joggling” — juggling with objects on the run. The combination of the words “juggling” and “jogging” just also formed the word “joggling”. American Bill Gidaz was the first, who had an idea to combine running with juggling, — and it was rather recently – in 1979. And also the first official record belonging to British Owen Mors was soon set. In 1988, juggling with five objects, he overcame a hundred-meter distance in 13.8 seconds!

Honestly I admit, these figures just shook me as I perfectly remembered that I even in the best years ran a hundred-meter race only in 13.2 seconds, losing almost ten meters to the friend to the athlete who had result 12.0. Yes, upon we overtook Owen Mors, but he at the same time also juggled!!! Yes not three balls, and at once five! However and that isn’t all. The record with the greatest possible quantity of objects on the run belongs to the Russian athlete Oleg Yakimuk who in 1990 ran 100 meters, juggling with seven objects! Well, and the record on the maximum distance belongs to Perry Romanovsky who in 2007, juggling with three objects, ran a 50-mile ultramarathon in 8 hours 23 minutes 52 seconds.

Impresses?

If not, I advise you — a little later, when you master the simplest “cascade” — walk with three fluttering balls along the park alley. Calm and slow. I think everything will become clear to you.

Of course, it is pointless to list all records. For all the short existence of this sport, there are a huge number of them. Virtuosos of all kinds of suits juggled and juggled for a while and a different number of objects, juggled in dance and on the run, on ropes and bicycles, alone and in whole teams. Bruce Sarafian of the United States achieved his highest score in 1995, juggling a dozen balls. Francois Chotard of France juggled nine balls with one hand. Even earlier, American Bobby May juggled 5 balls while standing on his head! Albert Lucas managed to cope with 13 rings, and Anthony Gatto juggled five clubs for 45 minutes…

Well, in addition to such famous names as Enrico Rastelli (an Italian born in Russia), David Kane, Michel Moshen, you can proudly remember numerous Russian juggling masters such as Sergei Ignatov, Alexander Kiss, Mikhail Rudenko, Alexander Frish, Evgeny Bilauer, Vladik Myagkostupov, Rudolf Levitsky et al.

Undoubtedly, in the history of working with balls you can find a lot of interesting pages and funny incidents, but the plus of today is that modern science has added to the sports component the discovery of the colossal benefit of juggling. Earlier generations could not even guess about this. And it was this circumstance that forced me to take up the pen, because I am convinced that, like writing, reading and physical education, juggling should also become an integral part of general education, helping millions of people to discover extraordinary abilities, increase immune and intellectual status.

Chapter 2 Right and left hemispheres, great ambidextras

To begin with, let’s be clear: a person who has more command of the right hand is called dextral (right-handed), and the one who more often uses the left hand is called senestral (left-handed). But there are people who are equally adept at both hands. They are called the curly word “ambidextras.”

Speaking of the predominance of the right hand, it should be noted that this phenomenon is common, and there are approximately 85 to 92% of dextrals in the world. Accordingly, the remaining category of people can be attributed to lefties. This is 8—15%. Natural ambidextria — a phenomenon in which a person with the same confidence owns the right and left hand, is very rare.

It is so arranged by nature that the right hemisphere of the brain mainly controls the left hand, and the left hemisphere — the right. As a result, some one hemisphere dominates, and we, walking through life, thoughtlessly use mainly our predominant hand. Indeed, it is easier and more convenient. Only here the result of this inequality is that over the years the gap between the skills of the right and left hands increases more and more, and the potential of the unclaimed hemisphere becomes noticeably weaker.

In the future, in order not to get confused with the names of the hands, we will agree to use the terms: “starting-non-start” and “leading-slave.” In this case, the starting-leading hand will, of course, be right for right-handed and left for left-handed.

Continuing to talk about the current state of affairs, we recognize that we are rebuilding the world around us rather harshly — counting solely on the dominant hemisphere. The arrangement of steering columns in cars, door handles, pencil sharpeners, buttons on suits and trousers, playing cards, designs of electric kettles, scissors, canned knives and even an ordinary corkscrew — all this is aimed at the right-handed population. If you are left-handed and write like everyone else — from left to right, but with your left hand, then you do not see the written text. Moreover, you grease the palm of the not yet dried ink from the handle. Great? In my opinion, not so much.

Nevertheless, the practice of retraining left-handed people in the “right manner” until recently worked everywhere. Even in the case of not the most difficult activities, for a left-handed person, the indicated process was quite difficult. It is not for nothing that the corresponding term appeared among psychologists: “dextrastress” — that is, stress caused by violent and uncomfortable retraining into diametrically opposite programs. Today, the situation, fortunately, begins to change for the better, and most scientists tend to believe that right-handedness with left-handedness is not a pathology at all.

In this sense, juggling can be safely called a school of comfortable and democratic adaptation for both left-handed and right-handed people. There is no imposed dominance of any of the hemispheres. Juggling establishes complete equality between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Everything that one hand knows how, over time, the other learns. Like neighbors on the school desk, hemispheres exchange all mastered secrets through the callous body in the brain.

So, teaching the starting hand to one trick or another, we are amazed to find that our wingman begins to do the same. Yes, this happens with some lag, but it also slowly masters the necessary technique.

As a result of training, we create symmetrical and quite equivalent neurochips, which just carry out the juggling process. This is a kind of collective parliament.

If someone believes that he lives well without all this canitel, you can conduct a small experiment. Take two leaflets and two pencils. Draw a circle with the right (starting) hand, repeat the same with the left on the adjacent sheet. It turned out pretty, didn’t it? And now in the same way draw a square, a triangle, a diamond, an eight. Write a short word — in printed letters, and then in capital. If your patience is enough for a whole line of words, touch your forehead. It is quite possible that by this time it will be covered with evaporation.

But!

Often changing your hands, you will notice how your driven (non-standard) hand will be more and more attentive to the work of the leading (starting) hand. In the most amazing way, she will adopt new skills, learn an unfamiliar! More precisely, neurons of the slave hemisphere of the brain will learn a new and unusual business. You will feel firsthand how your starting and leading hemisphere will help its neighbor, exhausted from unusual efforts. This is the same collegial work of the nascent DUAL-CORE and DUAL-HEMISPHERE processor! It is he who most clearly illustrates the advantage of the brain ambidextra.

By the way, the dominance of one hemisphere in the animal kingdom is not the most natural phenomenon. Accordingly, it does not paint people either. The conditions that we create for ourselves develop exclusively the starting hemisphere, and our second (driven) hemisphere practically sleeps. But it has its own unique features! But we do little to develop it, unwittingly contributing to increased “discrimination” between the right and left brains. As a result, even in situations where actions require increased control, our slave hemisphere is extremely ineffective. A paradoxical situation is created: the existing conditions of work and rest make both left-handers and right-handers suffer.

Therefore, there is no doubt that it is necessary to radically change the old approach to teaching children in preschool and school institutions. Without any stress, of course. The time has come for techniques that contribute to the natural and equal development of both hemispheres of our brain — with all their rich functionality, with increased memory and an increasing speed of thinking.

Learning should be built in such a way that the slave hemisphere of the brain becomes a full participant in solving life problems. A dual-core computer is more powerful and faster than a single-core computer, and something similar will happen to people. With Reading, Music and Juggling, we can develop both hemispheres of the brain equally. It sounds funny, but from a passive appendage — a half of your brain will turn into a faithful and full-fledged ally.

By the way, starting to juggle, I undertook to interview my acquaintances and very soon found out that many of them (usually the most wise and successful) — ALREADY own this art. By the way, my favorite writer Emil Azhar (aka Romain Gary) also juggled perfectly.

And since the names were used, I can’t resist and I will continue the lists, mentioning people who at different times also joined the ranks of ambidexters. This is natural left-hander Charlie Chaplin, who played the violin with his left hand, but wrote and painted with his right hand, this is Julius Caesar and Leonardo da Vinci, this is Nicolo Tesla and Luis Carroll. And also these are Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Auguste Picard, Shigeru Miyamoto, Alexander the Great, Benjamin Franklin, Paul McCartney, Vladimir Dahl and… Probably, you should not continue further, since the main conclusions, I think, you have already made.

And finally — an important stroke, which you should definitely know…

Yes, juggling promotes ambidextrium and initiates the creation of new neurochains. They are the ones who help us manage balls in the air. But these same neurocheps forming in the head are much more universal. And in the future they will be used not only for working with balls. The range of their capabilities is unimaginably wider, which helps jugglers (children and adults) make breakthroughs in other areas of life. In particular, this will be noticeable where spatial imagination is required, namely, in geometry and physics, in history and chemistry, in geography and in labor lessons. Hand motility, sense of rhythm, intuition, orientation and capabilities of the vestibular apparatus are an incomplete list of modes in which newly created neurochips will confidently help their owners. In many ways, this is what the growth of the IQ indicator is associated with. And this is no less than 4—6% (!). Tomography studies have finally confirmed an amazing phenomenon: in just 3—4 months, the brain of a juggling person adds 5—6% to the mass! And it’s not just a lot, it’s a fantastic lot! In essence, we become more memorable, smarter, smarter, which can only be surprised and rejoiced.

Chapter 3 Balls and our Fantasia

Once, fascinated by military equipment, I learned about the existence of combat complexes capable of detecting enemy batteries. Armed with computer processors, radar stations and acoustic direction finders, these formidable mechanisms in a matter of seconds along the trajectory of the arriving shells and the acoustic features of the breaks determined where the launch was made, from which guns or installations the enemy fired. Judging by the photos and videos, these are really serious machines operating according to their cunning programs, served by qualified personnel.

And what about military equipment, you ask? Yes, despite the fact that we are talking about really complex devices, about multi-stage algorithms developed by large teams of programmers. However, something similar is built in the heads of our neurons in the shortest possible time, as soon as we start juggling.

I will be distracted again and repeat the bearded thought: the human brain is unique. And the uniqueness of him is that throughout his life he does not lose the ability to improve. French writer Bernard Verbert said: “A person’s brain wears out when they don’t use it.” The discoveries of recent decades fully confirm this statement. If the nerve cell (neuron) is idle without work, it turns on the mechanism of self-liquidation.

Is it scary? And yes, and no.

The fact is that the total number of neurons in our country is really considerable (approximately 80—100 billion neurons). For comparison, in jellyfish — neurons only 800, in Drosophila — 250,000, in cockroach — 1,000,000, in rat — 200 million, in octopus — 300 million. An equal number of neurons are in a horse and a crow (just over a billion), in a macaque and a giraffe — 1.7 billion neurons each, in a bear — about 10 billion of them. But do not rush to proudly bend your chest, we are by no means champions. The same elephant has 257 billion neurons! And the brain of bottlenose dolphins is much larger than the human brain, and at the same time its neocortex (a new cerebral cortex responsible for higher nervous functions) is much more complex than that of humans. This, according to scientists, gives dolphins self-awareness and the ability to think. By the way, the number of convolutions in dolphins and whales is twice as large, and the language in complexity and linguistic reserve is quite comparable to the human one: 8,000 words in dolphins, and 14,000 in the average person! Agree, not so impressive a difference.

But perhaps it is worth taking a break from the numbers. Moreover, there is still enough mystery and fog in this area. It is now more important for us to understand that we use our seemingly quite promising brain apparatus extremely inefficiently. Actually, one of the hypotheses just claims that human old age comes so early precisely because of the idleness of our brain. And if with the end of schools and institutes, studies for us stop, then only we ourselves are guilty of this. Wise people learn throughout their lives! It is this process that supports our health like nothing else, significantly prolongs youth.

Any new problem tones the brain, and as a developmental task — juggling is ideal. We don’t just throw balls, our brains at this time work with shape, color, weight and variable movement. We are forced to build the most complex neurochips, and the software of these circuits will include all the laws of mechanics we know. Yes, we may not have enough knowledge of physics, do not know anything about ballistics, but the brain working with balls will quite independently fill these gaps. So it should be, since the balls fly not at random, but along predetermined trajectories, and we set these trajectories! Vertical, parabola, ellipse, eight — we chart the movement of the ball, absolutely knowing exactly what height it will fly to, where it will fall — and, therefore, to what place our palm should move in order to confidently catch the ball. In other words, at this time, the most complex software algorithms work in our head, and the neural circuits being built are quite comparable to modern processors.

A small illustration: one ball weighs 160 grams, the second — 170, and the third — 180. Let them throw a robot equipped with manipulators, and all three balls will fly in different orbits, slapping anywhere. To make the necessary correction, taking into account the difference in weight, you will need to make serious changes to the robot program. If the balls differ in color, and the robot tracks them visually, again it is impossible to do without additional programs. I was not too lazy and spent a couple of days trying to find something capable of juggling among digital mechanisms. Didn’t find it. More precisely, I found only an extremely primitive imitation of the simplest and disposable combinations. Of course, the success of scientific and technological progress is foolish to challenge. If humanity sets itself such a goal, the best engineers on the planet will certainly create a robot capable of juggling balls (maybe even clubs!). True, it will take both time and colossal costs. And this is not sarcasm, but just a statement of the amazing fact that our brains are much more powerful than existing computer systems. At least, he copes with the task of teaching juggling more than confidently.

And another significant nuance: juggling is primarily volumetric gymnastics, and volume tasks will always be more difficult than tasks in the plane. It is understandable that this affects the development of the brain. For example, if we compare the number of neurons in the cortex of the hemispheres in mice, rats and moles (representatives of the “flat world”) with the same pigeons, tits, magpies and rooks (inhabitants of celestial volume), then we will have to give the palm to birds. You will be surprised, but the raven will turn out to be smarter than a cat with a dog and at least not dumber than a noble horse! And the Ara parrot in intelligence will leave far behind the bears with lions and even confidently ahead of the huge giraffe! If we talk about the marine element, then this is still the same gigantic volume, requiring the brain of floating creatures to calculate calculations made in three dimensions at once. Perhaps it is for this reason that we observe that mammals living in an aquatic volume (grinds, fin whales, dolphins, orcas) are equal to humans by all formal features! Accordingly, draw conclusions about juggling, doing which, you break out of the plane into the volume…

And now a few words about mirror neurons — the very ones with which the whole animal world is armed and without which no training would be possible.

They were discovered by Italian neurophysiologist Giacomo Rizzolatti in the 1990s. A distinctive feature of them lies in the fact that they work not only during some action, but also when we observe the actions of other people. In other words, mirror neurons allow us to “try on” the behavior of another person. Like a network of small mirrors, a neurochain of similar neurons from birth sensitively tracks the volatile images of the outside world. At the same time, she not only passively reflects them, but forces the brain to copy these images, creating internal models, learning to move, talk, eat and dress. In fact, this is the same imprinting. Ducklings emulate their mother from the first days, repeating all her movements, learning to swim, and then fly. Smile at the baby and he will smile back, unconsciously copying your facial expressions. This is also an example of unconscious learning, and in addition to smiling, the child over the years takes on increasingly complex emotions from his parents: irony, politeness, anger, leniency. By the way, the kids also rise from the fours only because they copy the behavior of adults — without any pressure, over and over again making attempts to get on their feet. Lumps, abrasions — nothing stops them because mirror neuron commands are imperative. This works especially hard in the early years. To survive, a little man is simply obliged to learn — and learn as quickly as possible. This explains the speed at which we repeat certain movements, copy facial expressions, words and phrases, voice intonations. The example of children “Mowgli” once again confirms these conclusions, and, getting to the wolves, children run on all fours, among monkeys climb trees. No genes dance anymore, and none of them remember bipedal walking.

If anyone else doubts the existence of mirror neurons, pay attention to how infectious our yawn is. It is worth your interlocutor to yawn a couple of times, and your mouth begins to open itself. This does not mean that you are drawn to sleep, you just copy the visible image. And this is all they are, too — mirror neurons! By the way, the ability of other parrots (and not only) to repeat certain sounds and human words is also explained by the work of mirror neurons. If someone cries, and we see and hear it, our lips involuntarily tremble. Conversely — someone else’s fun boosts our mood, even if we have no idea — who laughs for what reason. We copy feelings and behavior, dance and sports movements, facial expressions and intonation — almost everything. And this is one of the most important natural components. A program that helps survival. We can confidently say that without mirror neurons, no personal development would be possible.

Of course, with age, along with the metabolic rate, the speed of building new neurochains also decreases, but on the other hand, there are already quite efficient neurochains, there is an invaluable experience in assimilating something new. This way we learn not from scratch, and this seriously facilitates our life path.

For example, knowing our native language, we are quite able to learn the second language, and the third and fourth (any polyglot will confirm this) will not give you an easier example. A child fond of drawing is able to succeed in serious painting, in descriptive geometry, and in spelling. A reading person loads almost all parts of the brain, and his mirror neurons perform uniform miracles during reading. Not seeing book characters, not hearing their voices, not feeling smells, earthly tremors, heat, wind and cold, an experienced reader reproduces all this with ease in his own imagination. It is mirror neurochips that allow us to turn into creators and virtual directors. Moreover, avid readers better understand their heroes, empathize with them, which turns the reading process into real art. Those who have reached this stage can safely call themselves established readers — Readers with a capital letter. By the way, the dreams of such Readers will not be as an example brighter, more interesting and more colorful.

But…

Paying tribute to Her Majesty the Book, I will still indicate one weak link. So, this is our vision with you, which, unfortunately, gets tired of books and screens. This is where juggling can come to the rescue. Why? Yes, because working with balls relieves the spasm of the eye muscles, giving the opportunity for full rest and high-quality training of our vision. Therefore, combining these two activities (reading and juggling), we find a new quality of life!

Both reading and juggling stimulate our mirror neurons — and in both hemispheres of the brain. But if multiple works have been written about the benefits of reading, then serious observations of juggling people began to be carried out relatively recently. The first researchers had to be content with logical tests and personal observations, but today theoretical assumptions are confirmed by the readings of all kinds of tomographs, clearly demonstrating that after 2—3 months of active juggling in volunteers from control groups, the amount of white matter in the parietal lobe of the brain increases by an average of 5%! A popular statement was also confirmed that the process is much more important than the final result, since the increase in white matter was observed in all students, regardless of their real success in juggling. At the same time, tests showed a confident increase in IQ by 3—5% or more. So the conclusion is unambiguous:

juggling and reading children (and adults too) are undoubtedly smarter!

It has been repeatedly proven that juggling people show better results of the mental rotation test of complex geometric objects (mental rotation test). It is also worth noting that research related to juggling is becoming more and more every year, and modern equipment only confirms the most optimistic conclusions. Actually, in the old days, craftsmanship and “handicraft” were directly correlated with the human mind. Recall the English “handyman” — which means master, skillful. And in Russia, many enthusiastic epithets were linked with hands: “manual work,” “golden hands,” “master of all trades,” etc.

Unfortunately, today we are seeing the opposite picture, since the dominance of keys and buttons is coming. This is called progress, but… Weaning children from manual labor, we do not protect their childhood at all, on the contrary, we mindlessly destroy them. Any hand work is in itself a semblance of a rebus for our brain. Trying to resolve it, the brain invariably improves and updates its “neuropark.” Old, non-viable neurons are actively replaced by new ones, and here we are talking not only about the development of intelligence, — already today scientists are seriously talking about the fact that by reviving neurogenesis (the creation of new neurons), a person not only smarts, but also significantly prolongs his life. It turns out that, among other things, juggling is also an elixir of youth.

Remember saying: “Nerve cells do not recover”? So — cross out this phrase with a bold cross; are being restored — and how! True, provided that we learn and continue to comprehend this world, if we strain the brain hemispheres.

As I said, if you combine reading with juggling, double winning is secured for you. New neurocheps created in the process of juggling further enrich the reader’s arsenal, simultaneously giving significant unloading to the eye muscles. In addition, fantasy and inner horizons receive an additional impetus, namely, according to scientists, this determines the success of children in school subjects that require spatial imagination — primarily in geometry. However, Academician Landau rightly believed geometry to be the science of sciences, and therefore certain breakthroughs in juggling can be expected in almost all subjects studied, from history to labor lessons.

Chapter 4 On Plans, Laziness and Great Goals

In the childhood besides animated films about Mowgli and the flying Carlson I liked to revise the animated film about “A brave portnyazhk” (the fairy tale by brothers Grimm). The main character in this fairy tale slammed time seven flies once then made an inscription on the belt: “I have a reputation for the athlete not without reason — seven with one blow”. The saying went to the people, and business here, of course, not in flies long ago, and that at competent approach it is possible to execute indeed at once several useful cases. I went to shop, in passing I took out garbage, I checked mail, I brought the receipt to the old woman to the neighbor, etc. Like nothing difficult, but similar tiny algorithms in life of any person hundreds and thousands over the years collect. As a result we receive saving of time, forces and own nerves.

And now I will make a confession: I am an idler. Not most, probably, malicious, but nevertheless I since early years regarded a saying about the laziness which is the progress engine with favor and gravity. How many various devices I invented to facilitate the life to what improbable amount of cunnings and tricks I resorted! I constructed the drafts helping from a fishing line and threads without getting out of a bed, to open a window leaf or doors, to turn on the light or radio. I studied temperature and composition of water most quicker washing ware. I tried to learn lessons in a dream from recorder tapes, and I made of the designer’s details again and again robots who instead of me could remove dust from a house carpet. Once, when I understood that to me laziness to set every evening the alarm clock (at the time of my youth there were no cell phones with numerous functions yet), I quickly studied the espionage science read from books to wake up in time. You adjust as appropriate a brain — and at the right time eyes open. In the eighth class, having been tired to cram portions of foreign words, I armed with a high-speed technique and for few weeks learned all school dictionary, and I had no more problems with cramming…

And now I will explain to what I conduct. And so, on my strong belief, juggling is the occupation which is ideal for idlers. Already at least because all spent efforts pay off even not threefold and where a big prize. Thinking first it is simple to surprise the acquaintances, you unexpectedly for yourself will find out that you became the owner of really magic abilities! I managed to tell about some of them, but, honestly, this list should be repeated once again as in a case with juggling we receive a package of bonuses about which we first don’t even suspect.

So, juggling:

1. It is the most effective help to our sight

2. It is a beautiful bearing and physical shape, an opportunity to train, without leaving the house

3. This controlled mood, an opportunity to struggle with depressions, the fast and operated synthesis of hormones of joy

4. It is a real opportunity to grow wiser and to noticeably move apart a framework of creative activity

5. This strengthening of motility of hands and improvement of natural reaction

6. This improvement of coordination between the right and left hemispheres of a brain allowing to solve effectively specific objectives, increasing attentiveness, strengthening memory

7. It is the simplest self-massage — due to impact on reflexogenic zones of palms and fingers

8. It is skill of planning and forecasting, ability to concentrate on the next specifics, on things there are enough abstract

9. This increase in the immune status, ability to resist to both bad mood, and unexpected diseases (physiology and psychosomatics)

10. It is an opportunity to get rid of addictions like a game addiction, smoking, alcoholism, overeating, etc. that is connected with “a phenomenon of substitution of hobbies” — one pleasure on another

11. It is some kind of philosophy, capable “to disconnect” the person from a material world, immersing in the accelerated self-scrutiny stream, allowing to perceive quietly misses, falling and unfulfilled expectations…

Whether all it? No, not everything, however you shouldn’t abuse your long-suffering. The immediate goal, in my opinion, is executed as I intended to depict the most important parties of juggling and to draw your attention to this most useful occupation.

I remember how the books urging “to reformat a brain and memory guarded me”, assuring that for full-fledged life we need to make a turn by hundred eighty degrees. As it was sung in one popular song: “at the price of hard we have to get happiness, otherwise it won’t please”. Beautifully? Yes. And it is even metaphoric, however, if to become thoughtful, you begin to realize that in realities everything is absolutely on the contrary.

Having fused and having worked too much, you won’t feel taste of happiness any more.

And, perhaps, this is what scares radical recipes that require tough self-denial, colossal patience, iron diets and hard work. No, I don’t vote for the available lightness of everything, however, talking about juggling, I was going to present you with a magical fire, capable of carving out the sparks of happiness without plunging you into long-term agonising states. By undertaking to radically redraw our brains, we can easily damage and something vital. And it is especially good to juggle balls, since it does not imply dangerous extreme. And if we talk about the creation of new neurochains, then all these processes will go gently and naturally.

And finally, another good news: a series of experiments conducted by scientists in various parts of the planet confidently proved that the changes observed in the human brain of a juggling person do not evaporate without a trace after graduation. Numerous tests already AFTER completing juggling training once again confirmed the stability of the changes that occurred, which formed the basis of a number of rehabilitation programs for people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.

I have already written that the ball is the optimal form of perception — both visually and associatively. Including it in the juggling process, we affect all senses at once — vision, touch and even hearing. It is this property that allows, according to doctors, to recommend juggling as the most effective means of therapy. That is why juggling is increasingly used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, the consequences of stroke, hyperactivity syndrome in children, autism, daunism, delayed mental development and even cerebral palsy.

Perhaps I will surprise you even more if I add that such therapy can seriously affect ailments that seem to be far from movement, such as dyslexia (reading problem) and dysgraphia (drawing and spelling problem). And these are not some kind of pills there that give a one-time and dubious effect! The results achieved by juggling are more fundamental and long-term. Patients are not just treated, they are armed with an amazing and powerful tool that no longer needs to be found in pharmacies and hospitals.

In other words — once you’ve learned to swim, start a fire, write, paint or cycle, you retain that ability for the rest of your days, and the same is seen with juggling skills. Having learned this art, you will never part with it. This means that you will be able to keep with you all the advantages that juggling gives a person.

Chapter 5 Juggling and Not Getting Sick

To be honest: when I just started juggling, the maximum I expected was to master the combinations called “ellipses” and “cascade.” I didn’t know about the medical benefits of balls then, believing that all this is a good physical education, a spectacular sight and nothing else. However, the very first acquaintance with the history of juggling, the study of the facts proving the serious impact of balls on our brain, our mood and our health, completely changed my attitude to the “fun hobby.” It turned out that the number of doctors who use juggling in their practice is extremely large — and every year their ranks only multiply. The reason is quite obvious: this is not just a “cheap and angry” medicine, but a medicine “cheap and cheerful.” The very cherished recipe that requires minimal volitional tension, more than compensating for all the efforts spent with a solid dose of joyful emotions.

And when the troubles with the coronavirus began around, and the population was driven home, it became clear that here, too, juggling for many people could become a real salvation, because, depriving themselves of movement and elementary walks, even young people (not to mention the elderly) doom themselves to illness. No proper ventilation — wait for pneumonia and infections. You will not serve time in four walls, and no locks will save you from the virus. Saves daily movement, saves cheerful mood and tone, directly related to the human immune potential. Thus, juggling into a state to help us in this situation as well. According to a number of doctors, even 30 minutes of juggling in effect are quite comparable to an hour’s walk, and any room can become a place for classes. No wonder the manipulation of balls is called portable gymnastics by many. Is there no mood to get outside, they scare slush, rains and frosts? It’s all right! We open the window, pick up the balls — and organize a small training session.

You can talk endlessly about the benefits of juggling. And today they say and write — and not just ordinary people, but specialists in the field of neurology and neuropsychology, defectologists, children’s doctors and adult doctors. Medicine has not yet studied the full range of possible assistance from juggling classes, since it is extremely extensive. But it is enough for us to know that the healing effect of balls is indisputable.

In this book, I describe recipes for quickly mastering juggling. “Columns,” “ellipses,” “cascade,” “fountains” — all this is within the power of any of you.

I note that the ideal option for teaching juggling is undoubtedly to teach the living — directly from an experienced teacher and coach, but in the absence of such consultants, we have to be content with secondary materials — videos from the Internet, mechanical animations, pictures and texts. Often people adopt everything at once, and this is quite reasonable. No one knows that it is we who will be closer and more accessible to understand. Someone will understand video tutorials, someone will learn useful things from the texts. By the way, it was the texts that I sorely lacked during my studies. There were videos, and you had to come up with the necessary explanations yourself. For this very reason, this written work turned out, although I understand perfectly well that no even the best texts with pictures can replace a living teacher. Therefore, the conclusion is simple: read, try, watch and try again! A coach and teacher will appear in your life — wonderful! But even without his help, believe me, you are capable of very, very much.

Chapter 6 Juggling as a Remedy for Depression

For the rest of my life, I remember the phrase of one of the parents, said on the water base of the Caravel detachment. On the lake that day there were dark waves, the wind howled, and it was quite cool. I asked if parents are afraid that their children will catch a cold after today’s regatta. The answer surprised me with calm: “Everything will be fine! So they will go to school, a cough will begin there, and here they are heroes! Ordinary psychosomatics!”

And this is absolutely true: psychosomatics, in fact, controls everything. Children running around in light attire — many wearing shorts, T-shirts and regular slate — barely risked catching a cold. Even, capsizing on yachts and finding themselves in the water (and the water temperature was below twenty degrees), they quickly came to their senses and, changing into dry, hurried to return to the decks of the yachts. And sad as it was, parents were right about school. Today’s educational institutions often provide visual confirmation of a different kind: in warmth and dryness, seemingly fed and under supervision, children suddenly begin to catch the most trifle diseases — sneeze, cough, temperature. Why is this happening? Yes, because the motivational environment is radically changing. The excitement of summer hikes is replaced by forced obedience to the rules of the school, and boring lessons in half with teachers’ popreks drive into apathy, or even real depression. The “psychosomatics” mentioned above continues to work already in a negative plan, the immune system fails, the first waves of diseases begin.

By the way, curious moment! — earlier physicians didn’t doubt that October waves of infections are connected with weather changes — with approach of slush and the first cold weather. Today many of school psychologists are sure that they a flu epidemic and acute respiratory diseases are provoked first of all by psychological state of children. The first month at school they still slip by inertia — on a summer optimistic wave, but further today’s school — with her negative estimates, with passive long immovability, with abundance of homeworks — strikes a crushing blow. The depression becomes the constant companion of schoolboys, the immunity falls, children begin to be ill. By the way, at schools with other psychological approach other picture is observed absolutely.

Perhaps, someone from you will be surprised, but today more often identify a depression with a true pandemic. Psychiatrists of the whole world sound the alarm, appealing about developments of state programs on prevention of a depression. Physicians seriously assure that in some 15—20 years every second inhabitant of the planet will already suffer from a depression! The reasons for that a set, but the main difference from centuries past (too not angelic) is that if earlier stresses had temporary (situational) character, then today they became horrible daily occurrence — almost norm. In fact all information market is based on the panic attacks. Humour with music to some extent try to keep balance, however these directions, unfortunately, lose in quantitative ratio. It is simpler to frighten people, than to make laugh or plunge into deep thoughts. And therefore daily and hourly the real tsunami from dramas, black sensations and accidents fall upon us. News on television are supported with messages of the Internet and radio. It is necessary to add personal disorders, loneliness problems, professional problems, price increase, social shocks to it.

All of us are terribly overloaded with a negative, and it is no wonder that the organism reacts to a similar information field total rejection. And it is shown or the increased indifference (absolute indifference to everything), or a bunch of mental and physical diseases. And the most widespread symptoms of today’s depression is a melancholy, apathy, lack of all desires, addressless aggression.

Whether it is possible to fight against it?

A number of psychiatrists seriously claim that it is impossible to be saved from a depression. If there is a biological predestination, then or reconcile to it, or escape medicamentous means which today’s pharmaceutics offers bottomless quantity. This judgment is so wild that there is even no wish to challenge it. Fortunately, there are other points of view convincing of the return. And the main thing from drugs against a depression the psychologists call vital motivation. There is she, clear, not from scratch, and the last decades increasing number of experts from psychiatry begin to think of true nature of our behavioural installations. The methods capable to change to the best our vital motives are improved, but this subject is so extensive that we won’t bury in it. Now it is more important to us to understand another: the motivation increases at those moments when at us something turns out when, having spent certain efforts, we open in ourselves big and small talents. And let this word frightens nobody! — talents, but not ordinary abilities! On assurances of ancient philosophers,

any given talents are present at each of people!

Only it is also necessary — to reveal them in itself, and further patiently to cultivate and strengthen…

Yes, not any work and not any study open this mysterious chest hiding human opportunities. Choosing any given courses of life, we quite often are mistaken. But have patience and open dozen similar chests. In some of them surely there will be that — treasured for what you also were born. By the way, all open “trunks” other at random will also not be a burden, significantly having added knowledge of life. Such reasonably useful experience, no doubt, it is possible to believe juggling art.

Once again I will note his obvious similarity to reading process. Like books the juggling calms, inspires and loads with new forces. This quality which is concealed in books allows to call them our friends (and not so information component). It is known (and it is the medical fact!) that reading the favourite book within 20—30 minutes is capable to banish melancholy, to appease alarm, it is essential to change blood biochemistry. The same occurs in the course of juggling, and it should be lit in more detail.

So the first explanation is our childish reflex. In fact, we should arm ourselves with balls, and the mood immediately begins to change. Hypnosis specialists are very familiar with this effect, animating the happy paintings of childhood in the memory of patients. On such images, installations are usually built on a cheerful mood, on bright thoughts, on health programs. In this case, balls are a variant of such a self-configuration, since associatively (tactilely and visually) become a link that returns us to childhood. As a child, few of us did not play with balls, did not have fun, tossing them or rolling them on the floor. And it was comfortable and good for us at that time, we had the most vague idea of diseases and worldly misfortunes. It is this association that turns ball exercises into something pleasant that does not cause rejection as in a number of other therapeutic methods.

I have already remembered the second moment, and it is directly related to human biochemistry. It is appropriate to add that a lot of experiments of this kind have already been carried out: blood samples were taken from people BEFORE juggling and some time AFTER. So, the analyzes carried out revealed a significant increase in the so-called hormones of happiness — endorphins, dopamines and serotonin. Although, to put it more competently, dopamine with serotonin are not hormones at all, but neurotransmitters. Hormones are synthesized by the glands of internal secretion, and then spread throughout the body with blood. Neurotransmitters are synthesized in nerve cells and ejected into synaptic gaps between neighboring neurons. But this is not even the point — it is much more important to understand that endorphins, dopamines, and serotonin, in fact, can significantly affect our mood. In other words, the lack of these substances brings us closer to depressive states, and their presence on the contrary causes delight, a sense of euphoria and other positive emotions. But the main miracle is that all these compounds are produced by the body during the juggling process — and are produced quite actively. In this regard, it is worth recalling the statement of Stephen Hawking:

Among all the systems we have, the most complex are our own bodies.

And this is true, but not the one that can terrify a frightening misunderstanding, but the one that inspires physical and intellectual exploits. Whatever difficult tasks we face, our brain, our hands and our body are able to cope with them. Such is their life potential, such is their natural task! And do not doubt that they will cope with juggling too. Of course, provided that you wish.

Chapter 7 Motivation Moves Mountains!

A few words about the internal biochemistry of man still need to be said. The topic is not just curious, but I would say — vital, undeservedly ignored by today’s pedagogy.

So let’s start with endorphins, since — these are perhaps the most famous of the “hormones of happiness.” It has been experimentally and repeatedly confirmed that with a sufficient number of endorphins in the blood, the state of anxiety disappears, pain is seriously dulled and even completely disappears, blood pressure is regulated, and the processes of mental activity are accelerated. Often such states are described by such epithets as “happiness,” “serene peace,” “intoxication,” “being in the seventh sky,” etc. I will add that endorphins not only help fight depression, but also relieve the state of chronic fatigue.

What can increase production of these hormones? In fact — everything that causes in us pleasure: tasty food (a source, we will tell honestly, not the most durable), the movement, sport, music, compliments, communication with friends, favourite hobbies.

Much more interestingly the situation with serotonin — the neurotransmitter which is also responsible for good mood and emotional stability, helping to raise a self-assessment, significantly affecting mental capacities is. It is proved that at the shortage of serotonin there is a feeling of uncertainty in the forces, the block and tendency to mistakes appear, — people at the same time fall into excessive self-criticism and fixation on unpleasant sides of life. Remember your acquaintances that day by day say only about diseases and political cataclysms that wind themselves a various negative. It is obvious deficiency of serotonin! The external failure aggravates internal state which prevents to correct something. The same trouble is aggravated by the long shortage of the sun, and the sharp thirst for farinaceous food and sweet (in a case with men — sweet is quite often replaced with intoxicated drinks) becomes one of the main symptoms of deficiency of serotonin. As a result we jam a stressful state buns and we wash down with alcohol, but as well as in a case with endorphins effect we gain extremely short. Moreover, upon termination of the eaten and drunk portions, there is the most real abstinence syndrome causing eventually serious dependence on sweet and alcohol. And it already — both the excess weight, and risk of diabetes, and a liver disease, and many other things — a vicious circle which should be torn resolutely.

In this regard it is worth remembering also drugs most of which part just and is the serotonin generator that shock doses just blows up a brain and the central nervous system of the person. Remember into what impetuous boasting drunk, what self-satisfied speeches fall they give out. Even more space self-conceit is shown at addicts. After acceptance of a dose in the crazy visions they are God-almighty. But effect of the taken drugs takes place so quickly, as well as in a case with buns and alcohol, and here consequences are observed really catastrophic.

Therefore it is better to cross out all this substitute garbage a crimson and fat cross at once, having addressed more reliable and useful recipes. Don’t doubt, the mother nature took care of everything, and the same serotonin is much produced at any occupation in which you try to obtain any progress. The respect and opinion of people around on you also affect its concentration. If at another sports training, at school lessons, on a language course, on classes of music, drawing or dancing art at you something begins to turn out, the organism immediately reacts a generous splash of serotonin. You at the biochemical level begin to understand that to you is for what to respect themselves, and it as avalanche promotes development of the second important neurotransmitter — dopamine. For this reason the last is called quite often motivation hormone. Being a direct antagonist of prolactin — hormone of a stress and nervousness, dopamine builds in the most magic way a cause and effect chain in your head:

I worked — I achieved success — I became a winner — I found joy!

In other words you not just begin to respect yourself for work (or any purposeful action), you also you coordinate required work to victorious result. At the same time the victory at you will be followed not by a dryish conclusion of reason, but rough and joyful triumph.

Dopamine — some kind of victorious prize of the nature for the spent efforts. Quite so it promotes evolution, helping to survive and win against the strongest and persistent individuals. It is no wonder that the wisest of teachers teach the colleagues not to stint school “gingerbreads”, and they are absolutely right. There was enough “whip” in life of children at all times, and here adults, as a rule, stint “competent and address gingerbreads”. As a result study moves the sluggish course, bad notes and hails don’t give rise to either serotonin, or dopamine. Moreover — instead (as protective reaction) the same prolactin (stress hormone), and behind it and noradrenaline (aggression hormone) is produced. As a result the progress falls, instead of love for school the pupils stay in melancholy and melancholy, with a great effort submitting to requirements of adults. Well, and a part of children can react and more negatively — and there is nothing to be surprised here. The biochemistry is biochemistry, and some bans rules here you will solve nothing. I don’t know whether teach in today’s teacher training Universities of a basis of “biochemical education”, but the subject for future teachers would be extremely useful.

And a few more words about dopamine…

Since this neurotransmitter is synthesized directly by the pituitary gland, its production cannot be helped by any sweets. A CASE is required here — and a case as successful as it is beloved. By the way, this is where the border between work and hobbies is often marked. We have to do work, well, and hobbies are an activity that we want to do. And best of all, when we manage to connect these two positions.

But back to our wonderful dopamine: so — reading, and chess with football, and any playing activity that incites internal courage contribute to the development of it. And juggling this courage warms up simply. First of all, by the obvious relief of the steps! Indeed, in the morning you threw the ball only five times, and in the evening — already twenty-five! A trifle, but believe me, joy will be absolutely deserved. And the consequence of dopamine emotions will be that tomorrow and the day after tomorrow you will again want to consolidate success and step even further. This is the “dopamine consequences.” An insidious neurotransmitter becomes the main motivator for the development of any success. Having learned the joy of a well-deserved victory, you will neglect surrogate substitutes. Juggling day after day, a little over the basics of fun art, you will turn into a kind of gourmet, “digesting” step Victory.

Take note of the fact that the regular production of serotonin over time becomes more and more familiar, which means that the process of starting the necessary chemical reactions will occur more and more rapidly. A run of victories — even if not the grandest — will inevitably affect your self-esteem. By the way, the personal core is tempered in this way. In addition, stepwise growth and constant heating with endorphins and dopamines will teach you to be calm about the mistakes you make. A clear understanding will come that

errors are a natural part of any learning process.
