You’ve probably seen the photos, which I took on my holiday. During the rainy day we are having now they bring back good memories!

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about holidays, and I would like to answer them now. To tell the truth, I spent my last summer holidays in the country with my parents. There were a lot of my friends, too. During the holidays I went fishing, picked mushrooms, and rode a bike. It was fantastic. Honestly speaking, I like summer holidays most of all because they are the longest ones. I have enough time to relax and unwind from my exhausting school year.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

Write back soon.

From: Ben_mail

To: Russian_friend_oge

Subject: Learning Foreign Languages

I am on so fond of Japanese cartoons that I’ve decided to learn Japanese. Mum says it’s hard, but I think it’s worth it. Besides, their writing is cool!

What languages do you learn at school’? What other language would you like to learn and why? What do you think about my choice of Japanese?..

Write a message to Ben and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100–120 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

***

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about learning languages, and I would like to answer them now. You know I learn English at school. Some pupils learn two languages in other schools but that is not obligatory. To tell the truth, I would not like to learn any other foreign languages because it takes up a lot of time. I do sports and am short of time indeed. In my opinion, your choice of Japanese is great. It can be very helpful if you are going to work in Japan.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

Write back soon.

To my mind, children should help their parents with the housework because it helps them get along with their parents and feel like a good family. Honestly speaking, I do not so much about the house. Usually, I take out the trash and tidy up my room. That kind of thing. To tell the truth, I hate washing dishes, when my mom is not at home.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about pets, and I would like to answer them now. In my opinion, some people don’t want to have any pets because it takes a lot of time and patience to look after them. Also, it is not so cheap. Frankly speaking, I do not approve of keeping exotic pets like spiders or snakes at home since they are dangerous and may hurt others. Better safe than sorry, you know. As far as my country concerned, cats and dogs are very popular here.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

Dear Ben,

You won’t believe it, but I haven’t made my mind up yet. I want to create games but I don’t want to be a programmer. I think English will be necessary for my future career undoubtedly, whatever it will be, because English has become a universal language of international communication.

From: Ben_mail

To: Russian_friend_oge

Subject: Ecological problems

…Yesterday we had a class where we discussed different ecological problems. Our teacher suggested opening an eco-club, where we can do something useful for the environment.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

***

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about ecology, and I would like to answer them now. In my opinion, the most serious ecological problem is air and water pollution. Our lives depend on that literally. To tell the truth, young people can protect the environment by cleaning up trash, separating waste, saving water, and convincing my friends to do the same. I am absolutely sure that ecological problems should be discussed at school because schoolchildren should understand how to eliminate those threats to their future lives.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

35. You have received an email message from your English-speaking pen-friend Ben:

From: Ben_mail

To: Russian_friend_oge

I am sure it’s necessary to have music lessons at school. They help us feel and realise harmony and beauty of sounds. Honestly speaking, I would like to play piano or guitar. I hope I will learn to play them after leaving my school, when I have more time to do that.

Write 100–120 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

***

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about art, and I would like to answer them now. I’m not sure, to be honest, that being a famous actor is exciting. It’s always a lot of stress, emotional tension, gossip, rivalry, and envy. No, nothing of the kind. You know I saw a theatrical performance last year. It was a Christmas show. I have to admit that I have never been to the Bolshoi Theatre yet. It’s a shame, but I hope I’ll visit it one day as I grow older.

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about museums, and I would like to answer them now. Honestly speaking, I don’t find visiting museums interesting at all. They look quite boring to me. We waste hours to get there and have a look at the things, which are available on the Internet. You know I have no idea of what museum I would like to set up because my attitude to museums is negative. As far as my free time concerned, I enjoy spending it on computer games or going shopping.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

Write 100–120 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about my best friend, and I would like to answer them now. Honestly speaking, my best friend is a kind of supportive and caring person. I can rely on him completely. As far as I remember, we have been friends since our childhood. We met in the kindergarten first. You know we have a lot in common, so we usually hang out in the shopping centres, do window shopping, play computer games, do our homework, and enjoy watching movies. We are hand in glove together.

TEST 11. Books

35. You have received an email message from your English-speaking pen-friend Ben:

From: Ben@mail.uk

To: Russian_friend@oge.ru

Subject: Books

…What an awful task — to read boring books all summer! And the list is so long! I like reading but the books I like are usually not my school’s choice.

…How long is your school’s list of books? What kind of books do you like to read? Do you think an electronic book is a good choice when you’re travelling in the summer, and why?…

Write a message to Ben and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100–120 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

***

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about reading books, and I would like to answer them now. Frankly speaking, my school’s list of books is quite long because each subject includes many of them. You won’t believe it, but I like to read comics and Japanese manga. There are a lot of images in them. It’s really exciting. In my opinion, an electronic book is not a good choice anymore, when you’re travelling in the summer since smartphones substituted it completely. An e-book has become old and obsolete.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

From: Ben@mail.uk

To: Russian_friend@oge.ru

Subject: Robots

…I’ve just watched a TV series about robots, their past and future. Robots are so cool! If only they could do my homework.

…What jobs would you like a robot to do at your home? What else can robots be used for? Do you find science fiction films interesting, why or why not?…

Write a message to Ben and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100–120 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

***

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about robots, and I would like to answer them now. You know if I had a robot at home, I’d like it to do all household chores and my homework, too. It would be quite helpful then. To my mind, robots can be also used for the delivery of products, car production, and driving cars. You won’t believe it, but I don’t find science fiction films interesting. They seem to me unreal and boring. There’re a lot of visual effects, but I’m not fond of them.

Excuse me, I have to finish my email now.

From: Ben@mail.uk

To: Russian_friend@oge.ru

Subject: The Earth Hour

…Yesterday was a special day — we had the Earth Hour. It’s one of the ideas of an ecological group called the Green Movement. We switched off the lights for one hour to draw people’s attention to the poor ecological situation on the planet.

…Do people have the Earth Hour in your country? What can people do to save energy in their everyday life? Do you approve of the Green Movement, and why?…

Write a message to Ben and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100–120 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

***

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your email. I am glad to hear from you.

You asked me a few questions about saving energy, and I would like to answer them now. To tell the truth, people do not have the Earth Day in my country. It is no as popular as in yours. I think people can do a lot to save energy in their everyday life, for example, switch off light at home, use fewer home appliances. Honestly speaking, I neither approve of the Green Movement nor deny it. They call for green behaviour, but this is more like a dream than a reality.
